Temporary public policy for nationals of Iran in Canada as temporary residents
These new facilitative measures are in effect and individuals can apply until February 28, 2024.
This public policy will allow eligible Iranian nationals currently in Canada as temporary residents to apply for the following at no cost:
extension of their temporary resident status in Canada
open work permits
study permits
Eligible applications submitted in Canada will be processed on a priority basis.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in Iran will also be able to apply for the following documents, at no cost, to help facilitate their travel:
limited-validity Canadian passports
Canadian citizenship certificates
permanent resident travel documents

Due to the ongoing situation in Iran, we’ve introduced special measures to support Iranian temporary residents in Canada as well as Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in Iran.
Iranian temporary residents in Canada
You can apply to extend your stay in Canada for free by applying to
extend your current temporary status
change your temporary resident status
For example, from a visitor to a worker.
In addition, the Government of Canada is waiving certain processing fees for Iranians who wish to extend their stay in Canada, and will also waive passport and permanent resident travel document fees for citizens and permanent residents of Canada in Iran who wish to leave.

You can apply for the following documents for free:
limited validity Canadian passport
Canadian citizenship certificate
permanent resident travel document

Conditions (eligibility requirements):
Based on public policy considerations, delegated officers may grant an exemption from the requirements of the Regulations identified if:
- The foreign national
- Is a national of Iran in Canada with valid temporary resident status; and
- Has applied for
- an extension of their authorization to remain in Canada as a temporary resident under section 181 of the Regulations, or
- a temporary resident permit.
- The foreign national
- Is a national of Iran in Canada with valid temporary resident status;
- Has applied for
- an extension of their authorization to remain in Canada as a temporary resident under section 181 of the Regulations, or
- a temporary resident permit; and
- Has applied for a work permit under section 200 or 201 of the Regulations.
- The foreign national
- Is a national of Iran in Canada with valid temporary resident status;
- Has applied for
- an extension of their authorization to remain in Canada as a temporary resident under section 181 of the Regulations, or
- a temporary resident permit; and
- has applied for a study permit under section 216 or 217 of the Regulations from within Canada.
Effective Date and Expiration
These new facilitative measures are in effect and individuals can apply as of March 1, and until February 28, 2024.
This public policy comes into effect upon signature.
This public policy applies to applications received on or after the date it comes into effect.
This public policy expires on February 28, 2024, and may be revoked at any time without prior notice.
